Norstar Ship Management (NSM) has completed the installation of the Starlink satellite service on one of its managed vessels, the Golden Curl, to provide additional bandwidth for both vessel operations and crew welfare.

The installation took place in Singapore and demonstrated connectivity speeds of up to 300 Mbps during initial testing, the company says.

As a first trial use of the system, a video conference was conducted between company IT manager Albert Santiago on the ship and the Technical Superintendent in charge of Golden Curl, Aditya Budhraja.

Since the installation, the system has also ben applied to other vessel operations, providing data transfer for navigation and real-time analysis and helping to optimise logistics, supply chain management, and fleet coordination.

Norstar says that it now plans to extend the use of Starlink to all its managed vessels, subject to their owners’ approval.

“We will do our very best to encourage our vessel owners to install Starlink on their vessels as it is a big step forward towards ship digitalisation,” said Mr Santiago.
