‘K’ Line seafarer competency management system certified

Japanese shipping company ‘K’ Line reports that three of its Group ship management companies – K Marine Ship Management (KMSM), ‘K’ Line Ship Management Singapore (KLSM SGP), and ‘K’ Line LNG Shipping UK (KLNG UK) – have obtained certification from ClassNK to implement a seafarer competency management system on vessels managed by each company.

The ‘K’ Line Group’s Competency Management System (CMS) was introduced to facilitate the development of seafarer knowledge, defining the competency requirements for each seafarer’s position and providing specific training and assessment guidelines to achieve those requirements.

The system includes a variety of suggested training options, including onshore training at the ‘K’ Line Maritime Academy training facilities, onboard training programmes by auditing and training superintendents, guidance by senior personnel aboard ship, assessments, and computer-based learning.

The CMS operates on ‘K’ Line’s MACK/KONeCT digital ship management platforms, custom-designed for KLSM SGP, KLNG UK, and KMSM by Solverminds, which enable seafarers and onshore staff to access training requirements online via the application.

MACK is used by KLSM SGP, and KONeECT is used by KMSM. The software is used to manage a range of functions, such as safety and quality control, ship inspection management, scheduled maintenance, procurement and training.
