Compagnie Maritime Nantaise, a subsidiary of SOGESTRAN Group, reports that it has deployed the Syroco software platform on the MN Pelican, to optimise routing of the vessel and improve speed management and hull performance.
The MN Pelican, a 155-metre ro-ro container ship, operates between Poole in the UK and Bilbao, Spain, on behalf of Brittany Ferries.
The Syroco system employs a digital twin of the vessel and leverages weather and sea data to calculate optimised routes for crossings. The proposed route, updated as often as necessary, incorporates operating constraints including arrival time and sea conditions for safe navigation.
“The freighter service operated by MN Pelican generates specific operational constraints,” said Edouard Leveau, Technical Director of Compagnie Maritime Nantaise.
“In particular, the cross swells frequently encountered in the Bay of Biscay require the routes to be adapted to avoid rolling which could damage the trailers being transported. Syroco’s digital twin is able to incorporate these restrictions into its routing algorithms in order to deliver relevant recommendations to the crew.”
The system has been in use on MN Pelican for six months, with fuel consumption and CO2 emissions reduced by 10.8% compared to the same period in previous years. Projected over a full year, this should create a significant improvement in the ship’s carbon intensity index (CII) and support a shift to a higher category, the company notes.
