CORSICA linea completes voyage optimisation tech deployment

CORSICA linea has completed the deployment of a voyage optimisation system from French start-up Spinergie, as part of a strategic plan to achieve a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030.

Spinergie’s Voyage Optimizer is a decision-support tool that helps users to select the most fuel-efficient voyage plan, analysing data collected by onboard sensors and meteorological information to create consumption models for each ship, supported by real-time monitoring of their activity and performance.

Fuel consumption simulations offer ship captains the opportunity to compare different route and speed scenarios to make the best decisions before departure, while taking into account operational constraints such as schedule management, port times, and logistics.

The tool also offers fleet management on shore a more detailed analysis of fuel consumption sources, to allow for identification of potential fuel reduction levers and better control of schedules and port times.

“Before departure, the captain enters the destination and planned crossing times, and the Voyage Optimizer indicates the most energy-efficient voyage configuration based on real-time data and the ship’s characteristics,” says Aurélien Maillard, ship captain at CORSICA linea.

“Captains are thus guided very precisely on the number of engines to use throughout the crossing, the average speed to adopt to optimise fuel consumption, and, ultimately, reduce CO2 emissions.”

“The design and deployment of this solution were fully developed with captains to ensure it meets their needs as effectively as possible. Daily exchanges with Spinergie’s team and the quality of data collected by onboard sensors allow for constant evaluation of algorithms for improved tool performance.

The software’s navigation assistance module is integrated into a real-time fleet monitoring operational centre, which CORSICA linea plans to further develop to be able to provide a full evaluation of the entire fleet’s energy performance, including the impact of technical choices made to reduce ship consumption and analysis of energy efficiency losses.

CORSICA linea has already made significant progress in its CO2 reduction strategy, recording a 15% reduction in CO2 emissions per nautical mile between 2022 and 2024.
