Tymor Marine has launched a new AI-powered app, DRFT MRKS, aimed at improving the accuracy and safety of draft surveys by replacing manual processes.
Users can record and analyse video of draft marks using an AI algorithm trained to identify and interpret readings, even when obscured by marine growth or surface conditions. The app is now available as a free download from the Apple App Store, with a version for Android scheduled for release in mid-June.
“By moving away from guesswork and leveraging expert-trained AI, we provide more accurate readings every time, reducing the room for human error and potentially saving the industry millions of dollars annually,” said Kevin Moran, Managing Director at Tymor Marine.
The app supports data capture from a distance, whether by handheld device or drone, and stores the last 10 surveys with video files for audit or verification. It can be used across a range of operations including bulk carriers, semi-submersibles, salvage, tide monitoring and inland water surveys.
Originally developed for internal use by Tymor’s naval architecture team, the system was supported by Scottish Enterprise, the University of Edinburgh, and the CENSIS innovation centre to refine the deep learning models and expand functionality for broader maritime applications.
