Kongsberg to begin US production of autonomous underwater vehicle

Kongsberg Discovery has announced plans to begin production of its HUGIN autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) in the United States.

The company says the decision is aimed at strengthening its US-based supply chain. Production will begin at its existing facility in Lynnwood, Washington, with the location of a future dedicated production site still to be confirmed.

HUGIN AUVs are currently in use supporting missions such as seafloor mapping, mine countermeasures, and subsea warfare operations.

“This strategic decision reflects our commitment to support the growing demand for advanced subsea technology in the US market,” said Martin Wien Fjell, President of Kongsberg Discovery.

“By establishing domestic production capabilities, we aim to strengthen our US-based supply chain and enhance our responsiveness to the evolving needs of our government and commercial customers. This demand has increased as global tension has risen.”

Kongsberg currently employs around 900 staff across 15 sites in the U.S. and Canada, with all business areas represented. The group says it plans to further expand its North American footprint as part of its long-term strategy.
