Seasats completes 12,000km autonomous Pacific crossing

Seasats reports that it has completed a fully autonomous trans-Pacific mission with one of its Lightfish ASVs. The 12-ft solar-powered craft travelled more than 12,000km from San Diego to Japan over a 150-day period, with stops for demonstrations in Hawaii and Okinawa.

The vessel also passed Wake Island and Guam during the voyage, with the entire journey monitored through a public tracking portal offering real-time metrics, AIS data, and video feeds.

Lightfish ASVs have been deployed since early 2023 for both military and commercial operators. Missions have included subsea communications, environmental monitoring, and coastal mapping.

“This mission just isn’t possible with any other USV on the market right now,” said Mike Flanigan, Seasats CEO and co-founder.

“The ability to hand-launch a vessel from a beach and then control it in real time, 5,000+ miles away, with pin-point accuracy and manoeuvrability, is game-changing for maritime operations.”

The company says it is now scaling production to support continuous autonomous operations globally.
