The International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO) and Inmarsat have signed a new Public Services Agreement (PSA) covering the provision of mobile satellite services recognised under the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).
The signing took place at IMSO’s London headquarters, with Mark Dankberg, CEO of Inmarsat parent company Viasat attending alongside Inmarsat Maritime President Ben Palmer and IMSO officials.
The PSA sets out Inmarsat’s obligations to provide continuous global safety services and establishes the framework for IMSO to monitor compliance on behalf of the maritime community.
It replaces the original 1999 agreement, updating the framework to align with the Reference PSA adopted by the IMSO Assembly, which has also seen Iridium also approved as an additional GMDSS satellite service provider.
“This agreement represents both continuity and renewal,” said IMSO Director General Laurent Parenté.
“Continuity, because Inmarsat has served within the GMDSS for decades with proven reliability. Renewal, because the modernised framework strengthens IMSO’s ability to oversee these vital services into the future, safeguarding the trust of the maritime community worldwide.”
