ClassNK issues new guidelines on container ship safety

ClassNK has published new technical standards aimed at improving container ship safety and stowage efficiency through data analysis and the use of digital twin technologies, with the introduction of three updated guidelines covering weather forecasts, anti-rolling devices, and container securing.

The ‘Guidelines for the Safety of Maritime Cargo Based on Weather Forecasts’ provide new methods for assessing short-term forecasts and their uncertainties, building on big data analysis of AIS records, past metocean data, and actual sea conditions.

The standard introduces calculation methods for applying weather-related load correction factors to container loading and lashing strength, enabling safer stowage planning on short-term voyages.

The new ‘Guidelines for Anti-Rolling Devices’ set out technical and inspection requirements for shipboard anti-rolling systems, including anti-rolling tanks. The guidelines detail evaluation methods for measuring roll reduction effects, supporting safer container stowage while also providing a framework for consistent standards across the industry.

In parallel, the ‘Guidelines for Container Stowage and Securing Arrangements’ have been revised to integrate the new standards on weather forecasting and anti-rolling devices. The latest update builds on earlier work published in 2023 that introduced requirements reflecting ship size increases and advances in lashing technology.
