ABS and KRISO to collaborate on nuclear applications for ships and offshore

ABS has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) to explore the use of small modular reactors (SMRs) in the marine and offshore sectors.

The agreement sets out a framework for joint research and information sharing between the two organisations, focusing on concept designs for both an SMR-powered vessel and a floating power generation platform.

The collaboration will also support the development of regulatory guidelines and international standards for nuclear-powered maritime and offshore systems.

“Nuclear energy offers unmatched energy density, reliability, and strategic independence,” said ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher Wiernicki.

“It is emerging as a practical and scalable solution for a wide range of applications, from powering ports and producing hydrogen to supporting floating data centres, synthetic fuel platforms, and desalination systems.”

The agreement builds on ABS’s ongoing work to assess the potential of nuclear technologies for maritime use. In 2024, the classification society published a study examining the feasibility of an SMR-powered LNG carrier, alongside its Requirements for Nuclear Power Systems for Marine and Offshore Applications, which outline safety and design criteria for future projects.
