Manta Marine Technologies (MMT) will equip nine Chemship B.V. tankers with its automated propulsion control system, FuelOpt, following a successful trial on the vessel Chemical Challenger.
The system is designed to optimise main engine performance and work in tandem with Chemship’s suction wings to improve efficiency and cut fuel emissions. The Netherlands-based operator will also implement Manta’s Fleet Analytics platform for vessel monitoring, reporting and benchmarking.
Retrofits will begin with two Japanese-built multigrade vessels by the end of 2025, with the remaining installations to follow in 2026. FuelOpt automatically adjusts propulsion in real time to maintain optimal power output and improve efficiency, regardless of external factors such as weather or hull fouling.
When paired with wind-assisted propulsion systems, FuelOpt also accounts for wind-gained thrust through automated engine adjustments. Fleet Analytics, meanwhile, aggregates high-frequency data from multiple onboard sources to support benchmarking across the fleet.
“After decades of relying on manually entered, error-prone consumption figures, we finally have everything digitally available on a single platform,” said Chemship Operations Director Michiel Marelis.
“This enables us to eliminate all variables and accurately measure the efficiency of our sustainable investments. We now have full control over our fuel consumption and are achieving optimal savings from our Ventofoils, thanks to the Manta Marine Technologies FuelOpt package.”
