RINA signs Singapore maritime innovation MoUs

Italian classification society RINA has signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), focused on maritime innovation, decarbonisation and talent development.

The MoU with MPA will establish a technology demonstration centre within RINA’s new Open Innovation Hub in Singapore, creating a collaborative platform to develop and test new technologies.

The organisation said that the partnership will bring together Singapore’s research community, maritime companies and international experts to work in areas such as smart ships, low-carbon fuels, battery systems and digital port operations. It will also include joint education, training and internship programmes to build skills for the future workforce.

The MoU with SIT will focus on developing maritime education and applied research, promoting exchanges between academia and industry to accelerate the deployment of sustainable technologies.

This collaboration will include research on vessel electrification, alternative fuels, and new digital tools to improve operational efficiency, while supporting student engagement in live industry projects through the RINA Open Innovation Hub.

“Singapore is a global innovation powerhouse and a knowledge-driven, entrepreneurial economy. Innovation at scale, advancing sustainability and fostering knowledge sharing are the pillars of RINA’s growth strategy,” said Carlo Luzzatto, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of RINA.

“By investing in research, building strong partnerships, and attracting talent, we aim to deliver tangible impact for the region’s ecosystem and create lasting value across its strategic industries.”
