University of Plymouth to expand marine autonomy training programmes

The University of Plymouth in the UK has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with SeaBot Maritime to expand its maritime autonomy training programmes into South West England and support new research in the field.

The partnership will focus on developing training programmes for operators and engineers working with autonomous and remote vessel technologies, while supporting research in intelligent maritime systems.

Both organisations plan to create new modules and co-designed courses using University facilities, with staff training included as part of the collaboration.

SeaBot Maritime says the agreement is also expected to support the development of standards for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships. The company’s MASS Remote Operator Certification will be added to the University’s course portfolio as the partners work on expanding skills development in the sector.

“We are delighted to formalise this partnership with SeaBot Maritime that both reflects and further strengthens Plymouth’s status as the UK Government’s designated National Centre for Marine Autonomy, with our University as the higher educational institution at the heart of it,” said Chris Fogwill, Executive Dean for Science and Engineering at the University of Plymouth.

“Our work will drive innovation in autonomous and remote vessel operations while ensuring students and professionals gain cutting-edge skills that meet industry needs.”
