Intellian reports that its Iridium Certus C700 GMDSS terminal has received Marine Equipment Directive (MED) approval, enabling retrospective upgrades to SOLAS GMDSS capability where Flag States accept the change.
The approval covers the C700 system, which combines Iridium GMDSS, LRIT and SSAS with L-band data and voice services in a single terminal.
The company says that the configuration targets vessels that require global coverage, including polar operations.
Existing C700 installations can be upgraded to MED status by adding the Safety Display Terminal (SDT) and handset and ensuring the installation meets GMDSS requirements. This avoids the need for full terminal replacement for operators seeking SOLAS-compliant capability.
