Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and Korean Register (KR) have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop a verification and validation framework for autonomous maritime systems.
The collaboration will focus on assessing AI-based perception algorithms and other core technologies used in unmanned surface vessels. DSTA will bring systems engineering expertise to the partnership, while KR contributes its experience in maritime certification, standards and regulatory development.
Both organisations said the framework is intended to support safe and reliable deployment of autonomous vessels and contribute to international standardisation efforts for maritime autonomy.
“This collaboration will support the development of robust test methodologies and safety guidelines for AI-based USV systems,” added Kim Dae Heon, KR Executive Vice President.
“Our goal is to enhance the safety and reliability of maritime technology, thereby building public and regulatory confidence in the deployment of autonomous vessels.”
