HMM has agreed a deal to install autonomous navigation technology from HD Hyundai-subsidiary Avikus on 40 of its vessels.
The Level 2 autonomous HiNAS Control system to be supplied offers active vessel control capabilities by setting optimal routes and navigating without crew intervention. The technology uses artificial intelligence (AI) to provide situational awareness and maintain speeds for improved fuel efficiency and reduced operating costs.
The deal marks 100 cumulative units of autonomous systems supplied by Avikus for large-scale commercial ships. HMM, Avikus, and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) have also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for further cooperation on the development and application of autonomous navigation technology.
Under the terms of the MoU, Avikus will be responsible for the improvement and supply of the technology, while HMM will deploy the system using real-world voyage data. HD KSOE will provide technical support for system integration across the fleet.
