France-based start-up AMPHITRITE has announced the launch of HIRES-Current, the fourth version of its High Resolution Current Artificial Intelligence (AI) forecasting model designed to provide more accurate ocean current data to optimise ship routing and reduce fuel consumption.
The company says that the model was validated against more than 100,000 measurement points across the North Atlantic during 2024 and has achieved 89% accuracy in current angle estimation, compared to 62% for the European Union (EU) operational ocean forecast.
AMPHITRITE has also increased forecasting quality at 24 hours by 10% compared to the previous version of the product.
The technology fuses multi-source observations, including sea surface temperature, sea level, and direct in-situ current measurements, which are then processed through neural networks to generate a global reconstruction of ocean currents.
The system is the result of research conducted at the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the Ecole Polytechnique by the founders of AMPHITRITE and is available now through an Application Programming Interface (API) that delivers forecasts with a resolution of 3 km.
The company’s applications are currently used by organisations including CMA CGM, Louis Dreyfus Armateurs, and the European Space Agency (ESA).
