NYK to trial behavioural science approach to fleet decarbonisation

NYK and its tech development subsidiary MTI have partnered with London-based Signol Limited to begin a trial focused on reducing carbon dioxide emissions through behavioural changes.

The initiative involves 33 vessels operated by the NYK Group and will run for approximately six months.

The project uses behavioural science to provide seafarers with personalised goals and feedback via emails and a web application. By analysing operational data, the system highlights how individual decisions impact fuel consumption and emissions, encouraging improvements without compromising safety.

The trial specifically targets the operation of engine-related machinery. By calculating and highlighting opportunities to reduce operating times, the platform aims to assist crew members in making fuel-saving decisions that were previously difficult to manage manually.

Data collected during the trial will be shared with Columbia University in the United States. The partners say that they are also are considering the publication of an academic paper as part of a joint research project to verify the potential for seafarer-led contributions to global decarbonisation efforts.
