Arkona gets bridge upgrade in refit

The German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) has awarded Anschütz a contract to modernise the multi-purpose vessel Arkona, upgrading its navigation and bridge technology.

The modernisation programme includes the installation of a SYNAPSIS Integrated Bridge System (IBS), which consolidates navigation data into a common user interface.

The system provides radar, Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), and conning applications through multifunctional workstations at all navigation positions. This configuration is designed to provide the crew with situational awareness and control.

The upgrade also features the new Anschütz SST solid-state transceiver. This technology delivers high-fidelity raw radar video to the bridge applications and uses sensors to provide accurate data for navigation and situational awareness.

The project follows the delivery of similar systems for new multi-purpose vessels currently under construction at Abeking & Rasmussen. The WSV is standardising bridge systems across its fleet to reduce operational complexity, simplify spare parts management, and allow for easier rotation of crews between different vessels.
