Spanish government to work with SEA.AI on marine mammal detection

SEA.AI has won a public tender by the Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico (MITECO), Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, to supply AI-powered maritime machine vision systems to support marine research, conservation, and maritime safety.

The technology will be utilised for marine mammal detection and technology evaluation purposes, with the project to include deployment of seven of the systems across multiple vessels.

The system combines optical cameras, thermal imaging, and artificial intelligence to detect, classify, and alert operators to objects, people, and animals in the water. This capability remains operational even at night and in low-visibility conditions.

The initiative currently focuses on the deployment and evaluation phase to help operators prevent whale strikes and monitor marine hazards.

“This project comes at a critical moment, as interactions between vessels and marine mammals are becoming both more visible and more complex,” said Esteban Campos, Sales Manager at SEA.AI.

“Crews need the ability to detect and react to avoid collisions, even in low visibility or at night. That’s exactly where AI-powered machine vision can make a difference.”
