The National Maritime Research Institute (NMRI) in Japan and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, report that they have completed integration of NMRI’s OCTARVIA programs with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s MiPoLin power prediction and lines selection system.
Released on NMRI’s cloud platform, the integration allows users to import hull geometry and performance data generated by MiPoLin directly into the OCTARVIA software, allowing ship lifecycle fuel consumption estimates to be created and vessel performance evaluations to be conducted based on actual operational data.
The collaboration combines NMRI’s lifecycle fuel efficiency evaluation program, OCTARVIA-web V2.1, and its actual ship monitoring data analysis tool, SALVIA-OCT.-web V2.2.
Previously, users estimated hull geometry and performance using simplified formulas based on a vessel’s principal particulars via the EAGLE-OCT.-web input tool. The new integration replaces many of these simplified estimates with accurate data from MiPoLin’s database, which leverages over 1,200 towing tank test results accumulated over a century alongside data from more than 420 ship designs.
By utilising the integrated data pipelines, shipping companies can achieve more precise tracking of propulsion performance, evaluate the impacts of weather and waves, and assess fouling or ageing deterioration. The combined system also supports regulatory compliance and operational planning, including Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) assessments, alongside routing and maintenance scheduling.
