Korean Register (KR) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Microsoft Korea to cooperate on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to drive digital classification and maritime innovation projects.
The primary areas of cooperation include improving classification services through the use of AI and data, establishing an AI-centred vessel data centre, and creating new AI-based digital business models.
“We expect to accelerate the transition to a digital classification society by integrating AI technology throughout our core operations, inspections, and technical services through this partnership with Microsoft Korea,” said Lee Young-seok, Chairman of KR (translated from Korean).
“We aim to contribute to the global competitiveness of the shipbuilding and maritime industry by establishing an AI-centred ship data centre and launching new digital services.”
The agreement builds upon a previous digital transformation memorandum signed by the two entities in March 2023. That initial project focused on cloud migration and upgrading collaboration platforms, which has now been expanded through this new partnership.
Current anticipated projects include expanding the use of generative AI Copilot and developing AI agents to improve productivity and quality. The joint initiative also includes developing AI-driven ship design support and optimisation services.
