Saronic to build $3bn autonomous vessel shipyard in Texas

Saronic has selected Brownsville, Texas as the site for its new US$3 billion shipyard, Port Alpha, designed to build autonomous maritime systems and software-defined vessels.

The yard is scheduled to begin construction in 2026, with operations expected to start in 2028. The facility will initially occupy almost 340 hectares at the Port of Brownsville, with the capacity to expand to nearly 1,800 hectares to produce vessels measuring up to 260m in length.

“America’s maritime future depends on our ability to build again,” said Dino Mavrookas, Co-Founder and CEO of Saronic.

“Port Alpha is our commitment to that mission. Built from the ground up to deliver ships at a speed and scale not seen since World War II, this investment is about more than constructing a shipyard. It is about rebuilding the industrial capacity, workforce, and manufacturing advantage required to ensure American maritime leadership for decades to come.”

Future expansion at the deepwater site could support the construction of vessels exceeding 365m, the company says, supported by multimodal logistics infrastructure and waterfront access.

Saronic plans to collaborate with Texas educational institutions and technical colleges to establish dedicated workforce training and apprenticeship programmes to position South Texas as a centre of excellence for advanced maritime manufacturing.

The Texas development follows the company’s acquisition of a shipyard in Franklin, Louisiana in early 2025, where it is investing US$300 million to expand capacity by 2.8 hectares. The Louisiana facility remains dedicated to building Saronic’s 55m Marauder autonomous vessel.
