Mintra has launched two online training courses to help organisations prepare for the European Union’s AI Act, which comes into force on 1 August 2026.
Developed in collaboration with Nordic law firm Schjødt, the courses are designed to improve awareness of the legislation and support organisations in meeting new compliance requirements for the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
The EU AI Act establishes a risk-based framework governing the development and use of AI technologies, requiring organisations to implement appropriate oversight and governance.
The first course, MGM-236 AI Awareness – Understanding the EU AI Act, provides a 25-minute introduction to the legislation and its implications for workplace AI use across all sectors. It covers AI risk classifications, prohibited practices and the responsibilities of organisations deploying high-risk AI systems.
A second 30-minute course, MGM-237 AI in Practice – Maritime and Offshore Sectors, is aimed specifically at maritime and offshore personnel, including seafarers, operators and supervisors.
It examines the practical application of AI in safety-critical environments, including navigation, maintenance and operational planning, with a focus on human oversight, regulatory compliance and informed decision-making.
“Our collaboration on the AI Awareness course has underscored the vital importance of understanding the EU AI Act, especially within the maritime industry,” said Luca Tosoni, Managing Associate and Avvocato (EØS-advokat) at Schjødt.
“As AI technologies rapidly transform maritime operations, this course empowers organisations to stay ahead of regulatory requirements and innovate in a manner that is responsible and forward-thinking.”
The maritime course uses operational scenarios to examine both the opportunities and limitations of AI, helping learners understand how the technology should be used safely within maritime and offshore operations.
“Artificial intelligence has the potential to transform maritime and offshore operations, improving efficiency, supporting better decision-making and helping people work more safely,” said Jessica Suessmilch, Digital Learning Development Manager at Mintra and former seafarer.
“These courses give organisations and their crews the knowledge they need to adopt AI safely and effectively, while maintaining trust, accountability, operational safety and compliance.”
