GTT Marine expands VDR data analytics to improve maritime safety

GTT Marine has commercially launched Bridge Operations Quality Assurance (BOQA), a capability within Safety Insights by Danelec that uses Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) data to identify safety-relevant events during vessel operations.

The system continuously analyses vessel data against predefined safety triggers, identifying events such as potentially dangerous close passing, excessive rates of turn or rudder angles, abnormal heading changes, sustained heel, excessive speed in shallow water and severe wind conditions.

BOQA filters data over defined periods to reduce noise and transient fluctuations, while incorporating operational context where available. Close-passing analysis, for example, can consider Closest Point of Approach (CPA), vessel length, speed and water depth.

The system is intended to direct marine, HSEQ and fleet management teams towards events that warrant further review, allowing them to identify recurring behaviours and operational trends across vessels and voyages.

“VDRs transformed maritime safety by giving the industry a trusted record of what happened when something went wrong. By leveraging that same foundation to provide safety insight while operations are still going right, BOQA ensures that every voyage becomes an opportunity to improve the next one,” said Christian Kock, EVP, Safety, GTT Marine.

“With BOQA, we can make proactive use of VDR data available much more broadly and give operators a practical way to learn from everyday voyages, not only serious incidents.”
