Indian Register approves Volteo Maritime electronic record book

Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has granted type approval to Volteo Maritime’s WAYSHIP Electronic Record Book (ERB), covering digital record-keeping for a range of statutory shipboard records.

WAYSHIP can be used for engine and deck logbooks, oil record books, ballast water record books, garbage record books and MARPOL Annex VI records, including VOC, fuel changeover, NOx Tier II/III switching and EGCS records.

The approval provides a basis for replacing paper-based records with digital records that can be more readily accessed, managed and analysed, while supporting inspection and verification processes.

“The approval of Volteo Maritime’s Electronic Record Book is a significant step in supporting the adoption of digital technologies across the maritime sector. It also demonstrates the potential of Indian technology developers to create solutions that meet the requirements of the global maritime industry,” said Tapesh Ghosh, HOD Type and Works Approval, IRS.

Volteo Maritime founder and CEO Surendra Lingareddy said the approval could provide a starting point for wider use of operational data beyond statutory record-keeping.

“Record books and noon reports are ground zero for any shipping enterprise. Without that first step of moving them from paper to digital, every ambition beyond it, AI included, stays out of reach,” he noted.

“75% of the market still sees logbooks only through a compliance lens, but when that data is captured digitally, it becomes the foundation for APIs and AI that move the whole industry forward.”
