Japan Digital Communications is to expand its communications management portfolio with the addition of a new smartbox system from Germany-based start-up SnakeWays, following a partnership between the companies.
Headquartered in Munich, Germany, SnakeWays was founded in 2019 by a team of maritime IT veterans led by Peter Schulze, former head of development at Telaurus and Globecomm Maritime.
The company says it has developed a modular package of applications running in the cloud and hosted on board the vessel within the SnakeBox hardware unit, which can be used to manage interfaces and switching between shipboard IT and communication networks, such as L-band, VSAT and GSM.
The box also hosts additional SnakeWays services for e-mail, cyber security, vessel configuration, reporting and device management.
“From the outset the objective of SnakeWays has been to develop solutions that minimise, and even dispense with, the traditional costs of implementation and support services on board the vessel,” said Peter Schulze, CEO of SnakeWays.
“We are proud to have been selected by JDC as their new service partner; JDC conducted an extremely thorough test and evaluation process prior to agreeing to represent us in Japan.”
