Norwegian shipping company Odfjell has agreed a deal with maritime software firm Oceanly to integrate Shaft Power Limitation (ShaPoLi) technology into its fleet of vessels.
The ShaPoLi system is designed to intelligently limit shaft power based on dynamic operational data in order to maintain compliance with emissions regulations by optimising fuel consumption.
Odfjell will use the system to replace some of its current Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) Engine Power Limitation (EPL) processes, which can have a restrictive impact on access to necessary engine power, especially during acceleration.
The ShaPoLi technology offers a more adaptive and responsive power management option, aligning with guidelines in certain jurisdictions, such as the Port of Houston, that prioritise the ability to override power limiters in emergency situations.
“Oceanly’s ShaPoLi is very simple to install, use, and operate,” said Gunvor Simonsen Meyer, Manager Machinery, Technology Section, Odfjell Ship Management.
“It has given us more flexibility and better control. But most importantly, it gives our crew assurance that the reserve power can be instantly available in case of emergency.”
