Fionia Sea upgrades autopilot to add fuel reduction functions

The Fionia Sea, owned by Leomar RoRo and managed by AdMare Ship Management, has had an autopilot upgrade delivered by navigation systems company Anschütz, adding a range of new of fuel-saving functions.

has upgraded the autopilot onboard the MV Fionia Sea. The is now in use, offering maximum precision when required and the widest range Behind the vessel is a shipowner who has once again opted for Anschütz autopilots.

The 187-metre twin-propelled RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) ferry, operating a liner service between the UK and the Netherlands, will now use the same NautoPilot 5400 NX autopilot already fitted on its sister vessels Corona Sea and Hafnia Sea.

“We have an ambitious strategy to increase efficiency and reduce emissions on our vessels”, says Carl-Johan Eriksson, Safety and Sustainability Manager at AdMare Ship Management.

“The Anschütz autopilots are part of our solution and have already proven their efficient steering performance on our vessels.”

The NautoPilot 5400 NX includes an ECO mode and course control mode, both of which reduce the frequency and amplitude of rudder movements to reduce fuel consumption. The autopilot features a graphical display of a course and rudder plot to allow the operator to optimise the settings at any time.

For vessels with twin rudders such as Fionia Sea, a toe angle function also assists in reducing fuel consumption by allowing the autopilot to control individual rudder angles, minimising the drag caused by the wake fields of the two rudders.
