Seaspan Corporation has signed an agreement to equip its fleet with the OneWeb low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity system, through a deal with KVH.
Seaspan is the first major owner/operator of container ships to partner with KVH on its OneWeb package. The shipping company had already equipped its entire fleet of vessels with Starlink connectivity services, confirming the conclusion of that deployment process in May of this year.
The OneWeb roll-out is aimed at further strengthening the fleet’s data connectivity infrastructure, enabling the use of a wider range of technologies and applications, including cloud-based software as a service (SaaS) systems.
“LEO satellite technologies have set a new benchmark for vessel communications, offering high-bandwidth, low latency, and reliability far beyond traditional marine satellite solutions,” said Adrian Alb, Senior Manager of IT Operations at Seaspan.
“This collaboration with KVH aligns with our goal of enhancing provider diversity and minimising geographical blackout zones, further bolstering the robustness of our satellite communications infrastructure.”
The OneWeb service and hardware will be delivered as part of the KVH ONE integrated multi-orbit, multi-channel network offering from the satcom provider.
