NS United Kaiun Kaisha begins data-drive vessel condition assessment programme

NS United Kaiun Kaisha (NSU) has agreed a deal to begin a new condition monitoring and improvement programme in partnership with UK-headquartered Idwal, to improve its vessel condition assessment and benchmarking capabilities.

The Idwal ID system aims to provide shipowners and operators with a structured, independent framework to track vessel condition over time, benchmark performance against global standards, and implement improvements.

As part of the initiative, NSU will undertake simultaneous condition surveys across its fleet of over 40 vessels during the first half of 2025, to gain an independent, data-driven understanding of fleet maintenance and quality.

“The main objectives are to grasp the maintenance status and vulnerability of our ships using a standardised checklist by an independent global inspection company,” NSU said, in a statement.

“We will also confirm the status of maintenance improvements made since our last fleet-wide inspection and support our crews in aligning with evolving industry expectations.”
