CMA CGM makes €100m investment in AI

CMA CGM has agreed a five-year partnership with French generative AI company Mistral AI to develop bespoke artificial intelligence tools to support its operations, committing €100 million in investment to the project.

The deal will see dedicated Mistral AI teams embedded at CMA CGM’s headquarters in Marseille and at Grand Central, the base for CMA Media.

The programme includes plans for the creation of a Mistral AI Factory focusing on applying AI to shipping and logistics operations. CMA CGM says that the facility will develop new tools to improve customer experience and operational efficiency through initiatives like automated claims processing, AI-powered e-commerce tools, and smart document handling.

“This partnership with Mistral AI marks a decisive step in the transformation of CMA CGM through artificial intelligence,” said Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM Group.

“Together, we will develop tailored solutions to reinvent our businesses, from maritime transport to logistics and media, with tangible benefits for our customers and our employees.”

“With Mistral AI, we are choosing a French technology leader that combines excellence, digital sovereignty, and a strong sense of responsibility, to build an artificial intelligence that serves both our performance and our values.”

The partnership will also support internal training at CMA CGM’s TANGRAM centre of excellence, aiming to equip up to 3,000 employees annually with AI skills.

The deal adds to CMA CGM’s broader AI strategy, which includes previous collaborations with Google and Perplexity, as well as investments in Poolside, Dataiku, and the launch of AI research lab Kyutai in 2023.
