Shipbuilder Fincantieri has agreed a deal with global consultancy Accenture to form a joint venture called Fincantieri Ingenium, to support the digital transformation of shipbuilding and port logistics.
The new company will be owned 70% by Fincantieri NexTech and 30% by Accenture, combining expertise in naval engineering with digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and IoT to support maritime operations.
Fincantieri Ingenium will also provide support in implementing the Fincantieri Group’s broader industrial strategy, to develop new digital services and optimise processes throughout the maritime value chain.
Among its first initiatives is the rollout of Navis Sapiens, a digital ecosystem for newbuild and existing ships, offering applications to improve operational efficiency and lifecycle management.
The system will include a digital platform to support AI-enabled functionality and provide a marketplace for value-added applications from both internal and third-party developers. The first vessel equipped with Navis Sapiens is expected to enter service by the end of 2025.
The joint venture will also develop sea-to-shore interoperability capabilities to improve connectivity between ships, ports, and shipyards. This is aimed at enhancing port performance and supporting broader sustainability goals by enabling data-driven optimisation of energy use and reducing fuel consumption.
“With Fincantieri Ingenium, we strengthen our leadership position in technological innovation applied to shipbuilding and the naval engineering industry,” said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and General Manager of Fincantieri.
“This joint venture represents a strategic step forward in accelerating the digitalisation of the sector, leveraging artificial intelligence and the most advanced technologies.”
“Thanks to the synergy with Accenture, we will develop cutting-edge solutions that will make our ships and infrastructures increasingly connected, efficient and sustainable, consolidating Fincantieri’s role as a global leader in the sector.”
The agreement remains subject to regulatory approvals.
