Gasum and Wilhelmsen Ship Management have completed a FuelEU Maritime compliance deal using Hecla Emissions Management’s FuelEU Maritime Exchange, marking what the companies describe as the first tokenised trade of compliance surplus via a third-party platform.
The agreement will see Gasum transfer surplus compliance generated through bio-LNG use within its FuelEU Maritime pool to Wilhelmsen, to cover deficits for vessels managed by the company during the first four months of 2025. The transfer is made using tokens issued on Hecla’s digital marketplace.
Hecla’s platform securitises emissions statements and stores them as tokens in a digital ledger, allowing for the trading of compliance surpluses among Document of Compliance holders, owners and charterers.
“FuelEU Maritime presents particular challenges to DoC holders with high exposure to FuelEU and those that will visit the market less often. So, it is essential we are able to secure a compliance solution that is simple and easy to use,” said Roine Ahlquist, Chief Commercial Officer, Wilhelmsen Ship Management.
“We are pleased to have reached this deal with Gasum through the Hecla FuelEU Maritime Exchange, which has enabled us to secure compliance surplus at the right price.”
