Athena Telecom reports that it has competed first activation of a OneWeb low Earth orbit (LEO) maritime terminal in GCC international waters around the Arabian Gulf.
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is a regional intergovernmental political and economic union of six Middle Eastern countries – Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Dubai-based Athena Telecom, a Eutelsat OneWeb distribution partner, notes that the activation is a sign of the increasing demand for broadband at sea it is seeing in the region.
“With this activation, we are not only bringing OneWeb’s powerful LEO network to GCC waters but also proving our role as pioneers in enabling the next era of maritime communications,” said Nima Baheri, Founder and CEO of Athena Telecom.
“Connectivity is no longer a luxury at sea – it’s a lifeline for safety, operations, and crew welfare. OneWeb allows us to provide the speed, stability, and resilience that today’s maritime sector demands.”
