Rockwell Automation is partnering with Energy Observer to support the development of Energy Observer 3 (EO3), a zero-emission laboratory vessel designed to test new low-carbon energy systems in real maritime conditions.
EO3 will operate without direct greenhouse gas emissions and features a hybrid power system using ammonia as a hydrogen carrier. The design combines ammonia cracking technology with dual fuel cells, a 100%-ammonia engine equipped with NOx aftertreatment, batteries, automated wind propulsion wings, and solar panels covering the vessel’s superstructure.
Rockwell Automation will provide automation, visualisation, and data management technologies to support EO3’s hybrid energy systems, enabling real-time monitoring, optimisation, and data-driven operations.
The collaboration builds on Rockwell’s earlier support for the original Energy Observer vessel, which demonstrated renewable energy integration during a seven-year global voyage.
