Ocean Wise and Trelleborg Marine and Infrastructure report that they have expanded access to the Whale Report Alert System (WRAS) through integration with Trelleborg’s SafePilot Pro navigation software. The move will deliver real-time whale-strike avoidance alerts directly to marine pilots using the system.
WRAS uses real-time whale sightings collected through Ocean Wise’s Whale Report platform, combining crew observations and automated detections from partner organisations. Alerts are distributed to commercial mariners by SMS, email and push notifications, and will now be displayed within SafePilot Pro’s piloting interface.
The companies will first deploy the integrated service in northwestern Australia, a frequent migration corridor for humpback whales between June and October. Ocean Wise and Trelleborg say the integration will support mariners in identifying whale locations during transits, building on the use of similar systems already operating on Canada’s West Coast.
“This collaboration demonstrates how technology innovation can drive environmental progress,” said Tommy Mikkelsen, Managing Director for Navigation and Piloting division at Trelleborg Marine and Infrastructure.
“We’re not just providing navigation tools; we’re enabling our users to be active participants in marine conservation. This integration showcases our commitment to developing solutions that serve both operational excellence and environmental responsibility.”
