IACS reviews progress on decarbonisation and digitalisation frameworks

The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has issued an update on its push to support the safe implementation of decarbonisation and digitalisation technologies, following its 92nd Council meeting held in London.

IACS Council reviewed progress across its Safe Decarbonisation and Safe Digital Transformation Panels, alongside updates on the evolution of the Common Structural Rules (CSR) and the association’s quality performance framework. The discussions focused on how classification can support emerging technologies and regulatory change without compromising safety or consistency.

Progress on digitalisation includes the completion of several IACS Recommendations addressing ship data quality, cybersecurity controls for ships in service, and vessel asset inventories for computer-based systems.

Further work is underway on the classification of computer-based systems, protocols for the exchange of 3D models, and risk assessment and communication frameworks for maritime autonomous surface ships.

“These significant technical contributions demonstrate IACS’ ability to support regulators and industry and address innovative and complex regulatory and technical challenges without any reduction in the scope and speed of its more traditional work programme,” said outgoing IACS chair Roberto Cazzulo.
