ClassNK has launched pilot testing for its 3D Model-Based Approval (3DMBA) system and 3D viewer involving ten Japanese companies to examine the feasibility of transitioning vessel certification from 2D drawings to 3D models.
The testing focuses on the NK-PASS approval management system and its ability to handle the Open Class 3D Exchange (OCX) format, an international standard used for the digital exchange of design specifications between shipbuilders and classification societies.
By using 3D models, the society aims to improve the detection of design changes and potential errors that are difficult to identify in 2D formats.
The pilot will verify data interoperability where 3D models are used alongside 2D drawings during the transition period. ClassNK also intends to publish guidelines for 3DMBA, which will outline the requirements for model submission and standard operating procedures.
The participating companies are: Oshima Shipbuilding; Kawasaki Heavy Industries; Shin Kurushima Sanoyas Shipbuilding; Shin Kurushima Dockyard; Tsuneishi Solutions Tokyobay; Tsuneishi Shipbuilding; Hakodate Dock; Namura Shipbuilding; Nippon Shipyard; Mitsubishi Shipbuilding.
Feedback from the shipbuilders will be reflected in the final system and guidelines, the classification society says, ahead of a planned release to the wider industry in spring 2026.
