Seaspan implements IoT platform to improve fleet efficiency

Container ship owner Seaspan Corporation has partnered with Raa Labs to deploy the RaaEDGE Internet of Things (IoT) platform across its fleet. The technology allows for high-frequency data collection from ship sensors and real-time transmission to shore.

The move is part of a programme of efficiency improvements through which the company aims to improve how vessel data is collected and shared with charterer customers, where each has unique data requirements and delivery preferences.

“For us, data isn’t just an add-on, it is part of the value delivery itself. By giving our charterers transparent access to near real-time data, we enable them to operate more efficiently and sustainably,” said Sebastian Sala, Director, Business Intelligence at Seaspan Corporation.

The system provides flexible data standardisation to support multiple formats, to allow for customised delivery tailored to specific operational needs while enabling the crew to access data directly onboard.

This integration has allowed charterers to receive vessel data in their preferred standards, supporting proactive decisions for fuel and emission optimisation.

“The key to unlocking digital transformation at scale is reliable, high-frequency data. Together with Seaspan, we’ve delivered a data foundation that enables endless use cases for Seaspan and their charterers,” said Ari Marjamaa, CEO of Raa Labs.

The scalable infrastructure is also designed to support future Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced analytics initiatives.
