Samsung Heavy Industries to develop floating data centres with Mousterian

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and Mousterian Corporation (M3) have announced an agreement to develop and deliver floating data centre (FDC) projects to meet the growing demand for AI compute capacity.

Under the agreement, US-based M3 will lead site origination, tenant sourcing, and project delivery. Shipbuilder SHI will provide the engineering, fabrication, and delivery capabilities for the floating maritime assets.

“FDC represents a new business model that extends shipbuilding capabilities into the digital infrastructure sector,” said Ahn Young-Kyu, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Samsung Heavy Industries.

“Combined with eco-friendly energy solutions, it will set new standards in the global data market and serve as a key driver of future growth.”

The collaboration is based on the premise that purpose-built floating data centres, located adjacent to existing power generation assets, can shorten development timelines by accessing power capacity that is difficult for land-based sites to reach.

“Bringing a partner of Samsung Heavy Industries’ calibre alongside our development platform validates the institutional viability of the floating data centre asset class,” said Min Suh, Chief Executive Officer of Mousterian Corporation.
