Port of Valencia completes 5G digitalisation project

The Port of Valencia has completed the IMAGINE-B5G project, deploying a private 5G network to test digital technologies including drones, artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality in operational port environments.

The Horizon Europe-funded initiative was coordinated by the Polytechnic University of Valencia, with Fundación Valenciaport, the Port Authority of Valencia and other partners developing the 5GVLCPortLab private 5G network as a testbed for industrial applications.

Five pilot projects are underway at the port, focused on improving port safety, security and operational efficiency through advanced communications technology.

One project, ADAPT-G, combines drones with mixed reality glasses for real-time surveillance of access points and restricted areas. Another, RESCUE-5G, demonstrated the remote operation of an unmanned surface vessel for maritime inspection, search and rescue missions.

A third pilot, 5G-VIRTUFIX, uses augmented reality glasses, remote expert support and AI to assist maintenance personnel carrying out repairs on complex equipment, helping to reduce machinery downtime.

The PORTSAFE-B5G project integrated security cameras, drones and automated ground vehicles to detect unauthorised access and verify the use of personal protective equipment, while the ABYSS-5G system combined 5G connectivity with an unmanned surface vessel for autonomous surveillance, environmental monitoring and coastal rescue operations.

Fundación Valenciaport says the experience gained from deploying and managing the private 5G network will support future expansion into higher-demand operational areas such as container terminals.

The organisation is also participating in the 5G-Valenciaport and COP-PILOT projects to continue developing digital technologies for transport and logistics.
