BetterSea launches maritime compliance AI agent

BetterSea has launched Stylianos, a maritime compliance AI agent designed to help shipping companies assess compliance exposure, compare strategies, source market quotations and prepare compliance actions.

The system works with data and functionality within the BetterSea platform, supporting compliance workflows across FuelEU Maritime, EU ETS, UK ETS, Djibouti carbon tax and Gabon carbon tax requirements.

Users can assess compliance costs for individual vessels or voyage scenarios, compare compliance pathways and pool compositions, and source quotations for FuelEU surplus and EU Allowances (EUAs).

Stylianos can also conduct compliance checks, including counterparty risk assessments, and provide guidance on maritime regulations and BetterSea’s platform.

The AI agent operates on a human-in-the-loop basis, with users required to review and approve commercial and compliance actions before they are executed.

“Shipping companies are dealing with more compliance data, more regulations, and more execution steps than ever before, on top of their day-to-day workload. Stylianos is our time-saving answer to that complexity,” said Maximilian Schroer, Co-CEO, BetterSea.

“We want users to be able to ask a straightforward question about a vessel or voyage and in minutes move from understanding their exposure to evaluating the best strategy and preparing execution within the same platform.”

For example, Stylianos can calculate the expected compliance cost of a vessel’s schedule before helping users source quotations for required EUAs or FuelEU surplus and prepare the options for review.

BetterSea said its AI models are not trained on customer data, with vessel, operational, commercial and compliance information remaining separate from model training.

“The important distinction for us is that AI supports decision-making without removing control from the user,” said Dr. Gordana Ilic, Co-CEO, BetterSea.

“Stylianos can do the analytical and preparatory work, including sourcing market options, but the customer remains responsible for reviewing and approving the final action. This gives teams the speed of AI while preserving the oversight required for executing compliance.”
