Athens-based ship manager Polembros Shipping is to install the Starlink service from Elon Musk’s SpaceX company on a trial basis, following the agreement of a new deal with Marlink.
Polembros is already a user of Marlink VSAT services across its fleet, and will evaluate the new technology’s performance on throughput and latency with the company’s business and crew communications, for applications such as video streaming, instant data transfer and remote systems access.
Polembros Shipping currently manages a fleet of Aframax and Suezmax tankers, with sister operation Polembros Bulkers managing a variety of vessels ranging from Handysize to Newcastlemax.
Marlink’s Sealink NextGen service combines existing VSAT and L-band back-up services with a mix of LEO (low earth orbit) or MEO (medium earth orbit) connectivity, 5G and applications controlled and managed via Marlink’s XChange platform.
“Polembros Shipping and Polembros Bulkers are companies with a reputation built up over many years for dedication to safety and quality; we value innovations like Starlink as a contributor to our performance,” said Vasilis Kottas, IT Manager, Polembros Shipping.
“Our partnership with Marlink is a factor in our success as a company which delivers the high standard of communications required by our fleet managers and our shipboard teams.”
