NYK leads Japanese R&D project for shipbuilding digitalisation

Monohakobi Technology Institute (MTI), the technology research and development division of the NYK Group, is leading a consortium of 10 organisations to develop an integrated simulation platform for ship design and construction, under a Japanese government-backed programme running until 2030.

The initiative, titled Development of Integrated Simulation Platform for Sustainable and Competitive Maritime Industry, is part of the Key and Advanced Technology R&D through Cross Community Collaboration Program (K Program). It aims to accelerate digital transformation in shipbuilding through advanced modelling, forecasting and lifecycle simulation.

The project will integrate virtual engineering into ship design and construction workflows, with the aim of enabling performance optimisation and supply chain planning. Seasonal forecasting capabilities will be included to predict environmental conditions such as typhoons up to three months in advance, to support safer and more efficient vessel operations.

Partners include Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, Tsuneishi Shipbuilding, Japan Marine United, the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, and multiple universities and research institutes.
