Japanese shipowner NYK Line has agreed a new deal with satcom service provider Marlink to roll out the Starlink connectivity service across its entire owned fleet, following an initial trial installation on two vessels last year.
Tokyo-based NYK Line has been a Marlink customer since 2013, utilising its hybrid network services across its fleet of containerships, bulk carriers, tankers, car carriers, LNG/LPG carriers and other specialised cargo ships.
Following the successful trial of Starlink on the two initial vessels, NYK Line has now contracted Marlink to integrate and manage the LEO service as part of its network and to roll out the system across the fleet.
NYK will utilise Starlink alongside its existing Marlink VSAT service on its owned vessels, with the additional bandwidth to mainly be used to deliver crew communications and welfare services. The existing VSAT will continue to provide the primary business communications channel, with L-band as a back-up.
