Ocean Technologies Group (OTG) has launched a new e-Learning title on Biofouling Management, addressing the impact of biofouling control on both regulatory compliance and operational efficiency.
OTG notes that the IMO’s Biofouling Management guidelines, while not mandatory, are increasingly being supplemented by national legislation, with several states having introduced laws that have resulted in ships with fouled hulls being banned from their waters.
Managing biofouling is also important in minimising fuel consumption, with IMO studies suggesting that a layer of slime as thin as 0.5mm on 50% of the hull surface can increase GHG emissions in the range of 25-30%.
The Biofouling Management e-Learning module, available through the Ocean Learning Platform (OLP), looks at the factors causing biofouling and recommends maintenance procedures to minimise its build-up.
It details the elements involved in biofouling management plans and maintaining record books, and also identifies when in-water inspections may be required, explaining how the duration and location of a voyage can impact the survivability of invasive marine species.
“This new e-Learning highlights the importance of having a robust biofouling management plan, which not only helps to improve the hydrodynamic performance of a vessel, leading to reduced fuel consumption and lower carbon emissions, but also ensures compliance with evolving regulations and helps protect marine ecosystems,” said Knut Mikalsen, Director of Learning Solutions for OTG.
