The European Space Agency has launched its new DECARDIS (Decarbonisation through the Digitalisation in Shipping) project to optimise ship-port operations, featuring a consortium of stakeholders that will work together to develop a sea voyage and port call optimisation system.
The group includes Awake.AI, ABB and Wallenius Marine, who will collaborate on the development of technologies to assist ships in adjusting their speed and arriving at the port at the right time instead of arriving early and having to wait for a berth to become available.
The goal is to eliminate fuel-wasting “sail fast then wait” operations, something that has also been a goal of the Blue Visby project.
DECARDIS aims to do this by developing an integrated and interoperable system to integrate decision making on ship routing and speed with just-in-time arrival processes at the berth, optimising the entire voyage and port calls, rather than just a portion of it.
The project will also move to integrate the OVERSEA voyage optimisation service offered by ABB-Wallenius Marine with port optimisation technologies from Awake.AI to create an interoperable system, with users able to access the integrated application through a web-based interface that is compatible with existing onboard systems.
“With the OVERSEA collaboration, we are establishing a smart fleet support service which enhances efficiency,” said Jesper Lögdström, Head of Performance Management Center, Wallenius Marine.
“We aim to give crews and shore personnel a common understanding of data and support them with insights and actionable recommendations to improve vessel operational performance. Transparency and close collaboration with clients will be crucial to succeed.”
