Marine insurance provider The Swedish Club has launched its Passage Plan+ Guide, aimed at improving safe navigation for shipowners, operators, and navigational officers.
The Club says it has developed the guide to address issues identified through its claims handling processes, with voyage planning a mandatory requirement for every vessel before departure, though with procedures varying between companies.
“As an insurance company, we handle many claims every year and issues regarding Voyage/Passage planning are a recurring theme,” said Joakim Enström, Senior Loss Prevention Officer, The Swedish Club.
“This is something every bridge officer should be familiar with, but the quality of planning can differ greatly from officer to officer. As such we wanted to launch the Passage Plan+ Guide to enhance our members’ existing plans.”
The guide includes guidance on issues such as the use of port cards for port-specific information, planning for confined waters, and sharing pilotage plans before the pilot boards. It also covers bridge team set-up, communication, and due diligence.
