Inmarsat parent company Viasat has agreed a deal with fellow satellite operator SES to integrate capacity from the O3b mPOWER medium Earth orbit (MEO) constellation into the connectivity set-up for a Viasat Energy Services’ customer operating an offshore vessel in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.
The collaboration is Viasat Energy’s first adoption of O3b mPOWER services globally. The mPOWER connectivity will be used to support both critical and non-critical communications onboard the vessel, with a guaranteed service level agreement (SLA) provided by the combined MEO and GEO (geostationary) system onboard.
“This collaboration with SES demonstrates how satellites can enhance offshore energy operations,” said Lee Ahlstrom, Vice President, Viasat Energy Services.
“By enabling the latest technologies through high-speed satellite connectivity, we can empower our customers to gather and analyse critical data about their operations and make important data-driven decisions that optimise how they work.”
